Writing program to debut online magazine

by

A new online literary magazine will hit the virtual shelves this May. The magazine, Superstition Review, debuts its inaugural issue with fresh fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, book reviews and art from established and emerging writers and artists. Submissions of art, fiction, nonfiction and poetry are being accepted until March 15 for the May 4 launch.

“The magazine is being implemented through a collaborative effort between faculty and students from Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus,” says Patricia Murphy, ASU lecturer in the humanities and arts department.

In addition to offering a way for emerging writers to get published, it will provide students with experience managing an online magazine.

“Superstition Review is more than a new literary journal,” Murphy says. “It is an important teaching tool because it is an integral part of the bachelor’s program in literature, writing and film at the ASU Polytechnic campus.”

The innovative magazine is student designed, maintained and edited. Students learn critical thinking skills, deadline management, how to correspond with authors, how to choose and format work for publication, and other detailed steps of the publication process.

As part of its debut, Superstition Review is conducting a three-part reading series, which began Feb. 25 with faculty from the literature, writing and film program reading their works.

The remaining readings are scheduled for March 31 and April 28 and will be held at ASU’s Polytechnic campus in the Student Union Cooley Ballroom B.

Writers from the ASU Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing will read March 31 at 2 p.m., and rounding out the series at 3 p.m., April 28, is the work of ASU Polytechnic creative writing students. The reading series is free.
